Good Omens and The Lies of Locke Lamora

Surprise, surprise I've got more book recommendations! No vampires this time I'm afraid. Just thieves and angels and demons, which honestly should satisfy all of you ^^

I'm going to start with the one that's more likely to have been read by everyone. I read it years ago myself, but forgot just how wonderful it really was. It's going on here simply for the benefit of those who have possibly never read it, *gasp* and hopefully some of you haven't because then I won't feel like I'm babbling. Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett (See? The names alone should ensure that most have you have picked up this lovely book) is about a demon and angel. They've been thwarting and manipulating and blessing and the like for thousands of years and have come to grow very fond of earth, and through extension of an arrangement they have, each other. So when the Apocalypse looms near they're hardly pleased, to say the least. Of course, they can hardly go against the ineffable plan can they? They're likely to be roasted by their respective superiors if they do anything that screams blatant interfering. So of course the only option is to subtlety manipulate the Antichrist from childhood so that no apocalypse is ever triggered. And then of course, someone goes and loses the Antichrist.
I'm afraid I don't know who to credit this lovely fanart to.

Throw in the four motorcycle riding horsemen of the apocalypse and the prophesies of some nutty witch and you're in for one wacky book that's a bit of reminiscent of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. (Albeit, even more fantastic.) The plot alone is enough to read this book for, but then you've got Crowley (The suave demon, who didn't so much fall as saunter vaguely downwards, with the snakeskin shoes and strange tendency to hiss when overexcited) and Aziraphale, (the dear, dusty, bookish angel) who exchange banter that makes you want to fall over in a fit of giggles. Basically, I might have been wasting my time by typing all of this, but it's completely worth it because on the slim chance you've really never read this then you need to pick it up pronto. You won't be disappointed.

The next book is called The Lies of Locke Lamora and it's about a thief. Or, I suppose more a small group of con artists who steal for the fun of it. Locke is the leader of this little gang, called The Gentlemen Bastards, and he's been living on the streets since he was small. There are two storylines in the book; the one that outlines Locke's past and how he became a first rate thief and "The Thorn of Camorr", and the other dealing with the huge scam their pulling at the moment. Of course, this book has plots within plots, so when the mysterious Gray King begins terrorizing the criminals of the city Locke is bound to get caught up in the convoluted schemes. My favorite part of the book was the world it was set in. The old city houses wonder upon wonder, the beautiful image hiding the underlying cruelty, where bloody shark fights are an everyday sport and unattended children are sold into slavery left and right. Alchemy has huge sway as does the worship of several Gods. Think alien, medieval Venice.

Well there you are! Two new books to read and I hope you enjoy them if you haven't read them already. Here's my outfit post for today~

****If you've no interest in Batman- movies, comics or otherwise, then here is a good place for you to stop reading because I'm about to rant a little about pretty villains ;)

So I was just rewatching Batman Begins. Partly because it's a really good movie, partly because I'm obsessed with the Batman franchise, and partly because oh dear is Dr. Crane pretty. I mean, really. And that dark hair and those glasses? Instant crush from the moment I saw him. It doesn't help that Scarecrow is so close to rivaling Joker for my favorite comics villains of all time and that he's so psychologically fascinating. (I love his back story too. Villains always have such depth compared to the heroes don't you think?)

Anyway, I'd forgotten how much I really loved Nolan's new, darker and realistic take on the franchise. I love how he set the movie when Crane is just starting out on his path to becoming Scarecrow with the early experiments. Though I'm always disappointed that he doesn't have more scenes, what with Ra's Al Ghul being the focus. It's such a shame there are only three movies. I would have loved to see The Riddler redeemed after *shudders* Jim Carey played him.... And same goes for Mr. Freeze, because Arnold Schwarzenegger? Was that really necessary? Of course, with Heath Ledger's unfortunate passing Harley will remain out of the movies, but there were opportunities for so many other villains. Oh well I've always got my lovely comics~

Xmas Haul

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! (Or any other holiday you celebrate) Normally, mine turns into a day of watching screens, as I always have this urge to see if I can beat the video games I've received in record time. (This year's winner being Resistance 2 which is a fantastic game, though not as good as the first one) So this year's haul...

Because I love the Joker. The Killing Joke is a classic after all.
Norse myths because of my Swedish heritage and love of Loki <3
And Edgar Allen Poe because those Barnes and Noble leather-bounds are gorgeous.
Now to get Sherlock Holmes and The Picture of Dorian Gray.
This little voodolls name is Siouxsie. She's "an old school
Goth who rejects conformity".
I love my parents ^^
A talking Dalek because it's adorable. And a Converse
piggy bank. When I opened it I thought they had only gotten me one shoe XD
The original Addams family! And a fishnet hoodie from my family in Sweden.

A Tones on Tail record I was eying in the record store and a
collection of 80s songs.
Bringing back my love of Loki. Marvel movie-verse this time ^^
Finally, The Hobbit because I haven't read it since 4th grade and desperately
want to see the movie. And a bracelet made out of bass strings. Isn't that neat?

Of course, there are a few things I didn't get. My Sherlock shirt, (The one The Infamous Blujay was wearing in the picture Jillian Venters put up on her Tumblr) a slytherin scarf, colored contacts, and a spiked collar being the things I didn't receive. So now I know what to spend my remaining money on ^^

I'm going to go see The Hobbit soon. I am so excited. For anyone out there that's already seen it, how was it?

New books! ...Again.

I'm constantly buying books. Seriously, I go through a book a day while I'm in school. I've basically exhausted the library we have. And then of course, I want to own the ones I love so on occasion I'll beg my mom to buy me a few for the sake of my sanity. Recently I received...

*Drumroll*

Frankenstein! Now, I have a confession to make. I've never seen the movies. Not the original nor the numerous sequels and spinoffs. BUT the book happens to be one of my favorites so I thought it was about time to add it to my shelf. I hate how people always assume it's nothing more than a monster book when really the philosophical questions it poses are monumental. The whole book is a question of right and wrong. If people would actually read it they might discover a fantastic piece of literature.

The alchemist is great. I'd suggest it to nearly anyone. It's just one of those books that a lot of different people tend to like. It's a story about discovering one's destiny and facing trials and hardships along the way. If you're in the mood for something inspiring and are prepared to deal with a book where everything's a metaphor then this is the book for you.

I finally got a copy of Dracula! This is definitely worth celebrating. If I had to choose a classic monster book I'd still pick Frankenstein, but I love this one too. The first time I read it I thought it was extremely dry, I'd never read a book written before the 20th century and it was very different. But I gave it a second shot and now it definitely ranks up there in my favorites.

Pride and Prejudice is another instant classic. I don't really have much to say about it other than the fact that it's a really great book. The characters infuriate me on several occasions throughout the novel and that doesn't change no matter how many times I read it, but that's part of the journey. They're learning to get over their...wait for it....pride and prejudice in order to finally get along. Bet you didn't see that one coming right? ;) My AP history teacher makes fun of me if he sees me with this book and starts spouting off in a British accent about tea and Mr. Darcy. It's too girly for him. Pshhh he can go back to his Lovecraft and H. G. Wells and leave my Victorian romance novels alone.

I love the artwork on this version!
The back.

In other news, my Batman comics showed up! I'm...not actually sure if you guys care about comics, but just in case a Batman fan sees this I'm going to include them. Batman: Dead to Rights is a compilation/graphic novel that collects Batman Confidential #22-25 and 29-30. It's basically set way early in Batman's career when he captures the Joker for the very first time. Ever. Of course, the police have never dealt with him before and no one is taking him seriously so they underestimate him. Underestimating the Joker tends to get people killed so not a great move on their part.

It takes you through his questioning and trial and all that jazz and with his flippant jokes and remarks infuriating everyone left and right it's a really amusing read. It's...comic fluff. Amusing comic fluff. Also, the artwork is great. Nothing bothers me more than a great story with horrible artwork. At least if a story sucks but it's got nice art I have something pretty to look at ^^

The other set of comics I got is Robin II: The Joker's Wild! (1991) (FYI, if I feature a new comic I get it's probably going to have the Joker in it. Just a head's up. I love comic-verse Mr. J so much.) In this one Batman has left Robin (Tim Drake) on his own in the city for the first time. He's excited to patrol on  his own...until he learns that the Joker's escaped Arkham. (Again....)

Hey look, I'm reflected in the silver ^^

The artwork for this one is pretty good too. I love the older feel it has. (which makes sense considering these are 20 years old by now.) I like the story of Batman Confidential better, but this just feels like a real comic to me. I don't know, it's just like the feeling I get when I buy a new record.

Well, that's all for now. I think it's fun to show off the comics I get because honestly, not everything I do all the time is goff stuffz and I'm a major nerd. And hey, it's Bat-man so I'm giving a slight nod to the subculture aren't I? ^^ Anyone else out there like comics? Graphic novels? Manga? I'm curious!

School Shopping + New Artwork

Back to school shopping...done! I'm all stocked up and ready to begin anew the learning process...sort of. The best tip I can offer when shopping for school is stock up on the basics. You can buy wonderful, unnecessary things later when you have the money, but if you're going to be putting together a different outfit everyday stick to the basics. Things like band shirts, plain black shirts, black jeans, skirts, dresses, tights and fishnets...etc, etc, etc. Whatever you tend to pick up when you throw on a typical outfit. Of course, if you dress in full uber-goth mode every day more power to you. Or if you refuse to wear jeans just hunt down a lot of versatile skirts. But for school I've always found the basics with a few well placed accessories and a pair of stompy boots can go a long way.

Old fuzzy pic of me. Without the accessories and boots this would be pretty plain.

From personal experience, I tend to find good things at Target, Kohls, and Bealls. If you want even cheaper things and don't mind sorting through hideous neon colors try Marshalls. I found my favorite black lace dress there. I also will admit to unashamedly stopping in by Hot Topic to stock up on studded and spiked bracelets. They're cheap. They're real leather. I've never had one break. End of discussion. Of course, online shopping is your best friend. You can search exactly what you're looking for. I found a new bullet belt for roughly $12 on eBay the other day.

Other than a bunch of black basics and that belt, here's what I've gotten for school. As usual, I'll buy more as the year progresses, but what I currently have in my closet will easily last me a long time so there's no rush.

Band shirts are a must for my casual days.
I'm so happy, my David Bowie and Bauhaus shirts have arrived!
Now I'm just waiting for my The Damned one to show up.

It's unfortunate how popular converse are now.
However, I find a good canvas shoe really useful for school so I buy them anyway ^^
Not to mention, stripes!

I've been getting back into drawing lately. My sketchbook tends to gather dust during the summer and then I 'rediscover' it as the school year begins. (Because I do most of my artwork during my classes ^^) The funny thing with my drawings is that they always end up being done in groups. I have some original art, but mostly I enjoy doing fanart. That means when I get inspired I always end up with five to seven drawings all pertaining to the same theme.

Recently I re-watched The Dark Knight, which reminded me just how much I love The Joker. Heath Ledger's version scared the crap out of me and his performance was captivating, however I've always had a soft spot for the dapper and charming comic/animated joker. (Mark Hamil's voice? It's perfect!)

Which led to two days of reading comics and watching Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures.

Which led to this.

I need to fix the top right Joker's hair and color the bottom ones.

TNBA Joker is my absolute favorite <3

Now to wrap this post up. Just in case no one has seen this wonderful, fantastic, extraordinary, amazing, awesome Joker cosplay by the genius who is Anthony Misiano...brace yourself.

I'm in love <3

Cyanide and Happiness

I'm exhausted, but FCAT is over!

Now I've only got EOC exams and finals to study for... >.<

On the bright side, we get to pick our classes for next year soon! AP psych, ceramics and  photography have all filled up with upperclassmen so I have no idea what I'm going to do for my last elective...I wanted something fun and artsy dammit! If picking peoples' brains apart wasn't an option. We'll see how it goes, maybe I'll get lucky and there'll be an opening.

The middle school bands used the high school for their concert today, so I stayed behind to help out. I was squeeing all over the cute little bandlings! They're just so short and adorable. One of them was carrying a tuba almost his size...poor kid... I was surrounded by white tuxedo shirts and the whole time my brain kept shouting "Remember those? Remember how awful they were? Remember?" Oh nostalgia...

And the reactions? Priceless. Wide eyed looks and more than a few jaws dropping. My old band teacher's new greeting for me nowadays is "Megan, what are you wearing?" which irks me, but I deal. Normally my response is along the lines of "Um, clothes?" Which apparently she doesn't appreciate. As I was helping clean up, I swear I heard one of the 6th graders whisper to his friend "Look, its a goth!" Because apparently we're a species of wild animal? I've never been called an 'it' before but hey, there's a first time for everything.

I don't necessarily like attention but I accepted the fact a long time ago that I'm going to get it. People are naturally curious. When they see something different or out of the ordinary, they stare. Rude? Yes. Expected? Well, that too. And I'll admit to doing the same thing. I'm guilty! Once, I saw this Lolita girl working at DSW shoes. I was too afraid to approach her and ask where she got her dress, so I ended up hiding behind a shoe rack and spying on her for half an hour. (I really need to work on my social skills don't I?)

So, negative attention. Most of us deal with it and it sucks. That's really all there is to say. But when I get positive attention it makes it that much more important to me. Most people don't appreciate alternative style, so when some stranger stops me to tell me they love my skirt or my boots or my outfit it makes me more happy than anything. Its not like they're telling me they like my Abercrombie shirt. (You know, the one everyone has, just in a different color?) They're telling me that they like my aesthetic for being what it is, different. That they don't mind someone being different and reflecting that in their look. And it makes me all fuzzy inside :3

My best friend sent me this comic to, well apparently to cheer me up after a long day. It did make me laugh... Nervously.

O.o"

Should I be scared? Should I run? She has a tendency to threaten people with pencils when irritated...or is that me? Heh...

Anyway, this webcomic is called Cyanide and Happiness and its the perfect combination of cynical humor and sadistic fun. You should check it out.
